This group of Ute warriors conduct a recon mission in the highlands of Colorado. Compositionally, the work focuses on the man on the grey horse. He carries a spear and sits atop trade blankets. To his right, the rider carries a shield and coup stick. The man in the back carries a Yellow Boy Rifle--its stock covered in rawhide due to extensive use. The warrior to his right wears a red trade shirt and a brass arm band. I took the reference photos for this photo in the Eagle River Valley, near modern day Vail, Colorado. It was early spring, near the end of winter. The snow on the banks, contrasted with the melting snow, really struck me as a great scene.
