About Generations

Three generations of Lakota men in one portrait

Generations features three generations of a Lakota family. All three carry shields - the shield binds them together thematically:

• The grandfather is seated astride a horse and is the the most elaborately dressed - appropriate with his stature in the community. He wears a buffalo headdress and warshirt with ermine tassels.
• The father, standing next to the grandfather's horse, wears an impressive claw necklace and carries a shield with eagle feathers.
• The son stands in front. He carries a shield with hawk feathers and with a wolf paw motif to represent "wolf medicine."

I use circles to express the circle of life. Each person carries a round shield and the horse also has a circle around his eye (to give horse good eyesight for battle). The circular motifs are further arranged in a circle in the composition.
